Afterglow’s Impact

Libra 6°

Afterglow consistently touts Provincetown as an perfect destination spot for travelers during festival week. Afterglow draws upwards of 85% of its audience from Off-Cape—mainly New England, the mid-Atlantic and the West Coast. Attendees secure lodging, frequent restaurants, bars, lounges and nightclubs and partake of the many shops, museums and galleries and services. Business owners cite an economic boon during Afterglow week—audiences and artists not only eat, drink and shop, but also take tours, rent bikes, ride ferries and sample all the town has on offer. Afterglow advertises town businesses via its website, programs and social media. Festival artists likewise promote businesses they frequent via Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Afterglow disseminates information on town businesses to its artists and showgoers. Afterglow’s audience are well-heeled travelers who spend generously, tip freely, support local commerce and enrich the Provincetown’s economy. The festival has partnered with other non-profits, donating proceeds of its shows to such organizations as The Trevor Project, Camp Lightbulb, the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod and Helping Our Women (HOW). Afterglow tries to raise funds to produce work, increasingly, in the off-season and has planned ancillary programs, workshops and lab productions that attract participants year-round.

Afterglow Description

Libra 5°

I need to write some grant copy for my festival and I might as well work on it here.

Afterglow is Provincetown’s Live Performance Arts Festival. The 8th annual Afterglow takes stage September 10-16, 2018 at the Art House. Afterglow brings to Provincetown informed audiences from the region, country, and abroad to see its award-winning artists, who typically only appear in festival capitals like New York, Los Angeles, Sydney, London, Berlin, San Francisco, Manchester, Dublin, Edinburgh, and the like. Afterglow has earned Provincetown a star on the international festival map, opening dialogues with other festivals world-wide. Afterglow’s artists make headlines as social icons and activists; and range from the newly emerging to Grammy-, Tony-, Sundance-, Obie- and Academy- award- winners innovating performance as we know it. Afterglow presents solo plays, neo cabaret, progressive sketch, performance art, multimedia, dance, electronica, poetic/rap, rock opera, musical comedy and other forms, fostering Provincetown’s reputation as a important live-arts center, not just a commercial/resort entertainment town. Afterglow cultivates local talent—performers, designers, costumers, choreographers, composers, playwrights —in festival, and with ancillary productions. The festival created a “playwright’s initiative” and produced work at top venues/theaters under the “Afterglow of Provincetown” aegis. Afterglow reclaims Provincetown’s birthright as the birth place and incubator of the modern American stage, receiving support and promotion from Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater and Dixon Place in NYC and Oberon at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge where Afterglow produces the successful Glowberon series, now in its third expanded season. Works originated at Afterglow have moved Off-Broadway, to NYC, and to London, Los Angeles, Paris and other major cities around the globe. 256

Chart Notes Two

Libra 4°

With Sun in Cancer in the seventh house, you can be predisposed to seeing yourself too much through others’ eyes, and must make an effort to be more directive an objective in your outlook. “What other people think about you is none of your business” are words of wisdom to live by. On the upside, you are incredibly sensitive to others’ feelings and empathetic. You should applaud yourself for being caring, but be careful not to fall into too much care-taking.

You have a Capricorn rising which helps cut through the emotionality in your make-up. This provides you a high-status lens on the world and the ability to hold yourself up in high esteem. You may be saddled with responsibility, especially in your youth, made to act as an adult before your time. As you age, you grow down!

The Moon conjunct Neptune in your twelfth house, in Sagittarius, is a highly spiritual signature. You are probably more psychic than we are. At the very least you are intuitive to the max, and impressionistic in your approach to life—better off letting direction and opportunity emerge rather than asserting any kind of strict agenda. Flashes of genius happen in dreams.

Uranus, dignified in the eleventh house, opposing Chiron in the fifth poses a challenges to your creativity. You may feel a need to play (too) safe in the act of creation and to suppress freakier elements of your nature overall. It is your unique vision and eccentricities, however, that are your artistic strength. You need to get over feelings of shame or blame for having expressed yourself boldly in the past.

A conjunct of Jupiter and Mercury in your psychological eighth house T-square this opposition. Narrative therapy is especially helpful in getting to the root of pain that can rear its head and derail you. You want to dig deeper into inner dialogue as opposed to oversharing on the same topics with others. A person with this signature definitely has a story to tell, one that is profoundly personal but has universal resonance.

With Saturn in the ninth house there can be discomfort surrounding travel or even higher learning. These may trigger feelings of abandonment or nightmares regarding the succesful completion of projects. Hard to say whether it’s nature or nurture, but the environmental challenges that might have occured during intense periods of learning—or having to make geographical moves, or changing schools at certain times, have created a sense of dis-ease around leaving the safety of bubbles you’ve created for yourself.

You must realize that you are your own authority and you are not seeking approval on any level. You must dare to suck and dare to fail. Only then will you make gorgeous inroads into uncharted creative territory. Be as exaggerated as you feel!

Chart Notes One

Libra 3°

Since nobody ever reads this, and I’m not going to name names, I’m going to use this opportunity to work on a few charts for audience members attending our Xmas show (who already sent us their info in September!)

With Sun in Virgo in the fifth house, you’re a consummate creative working in tangible (Virgo is mutable-earth sign) media rather than the abstract. The Sun opposes Jupiter in Pisces in the eleventh house, which can make your creative output or appeal feel at odds with more widespread appeal or acceptance (in the short term); but the trick is to allow yourself to be “seen”, to think bigger to be bigger. Jupiter in Pisces can amplify a need to escape and to become lost in crowds or the fog of your own imagination. Jupiter also opposes Venus in the fourth house of, among other attributes, your home and private life. We imagine you have a fairly femmy aesthetic with a surplus of gorgeous things like ornaments, pillows, jewelry, make-up and collectibles. You might say it’s a crowded aesthetic, by no means spare.

Taurus rising gives you a rather innocent lens on the world and you might idealize your childhood or the trappings thereof. Since the ruler of your rising sign rules your entire chart, we double back to Venus to check it’s influence on you: As it makes square aspect to Neptune in your seventh house, this can have a bit of an arrested-development effect on your notion of one on one relationships. You are a romantic, even fantasist when it comes to relationships, but you can have difficulty with the more, shall we say, intense elements of intimacy. To coin a phrase by a dear friend: You want to keep it light and keep it moving in love. You yearn for deep connection but you aren’t easily wedged out of your comfort zone.

We find the healer, Chiron, in your twelfth house, which means you can keep deep-seated pain very much to yourself. Emotional wounds, especially, aren’t ones you readily acknowledge or share with others. Saturn in your third house suggests that there may have been a strictness in your upbringing or schooling, that structure was highlighted. Often children who come from military families have this signature. Saturn is in Cancer so you might have had to keep strict reins on emotions and, now, in adulthood, feel a need to more easily access your feelings.

In contract you have the Moon in the fourth house in Leo which suggests that, at your core, you are quite a strong person with important passions you pursue. We also see that your more nurturative parent might have been quite fiercely protective and championed your desire to slip into (and stay in) the realm of your imagination.

With Mars and Pluto conjunct (they operate as a team) in your fifth house, you are no stranger to difficulties; and have likely encountered a series of abrupt “endings” in your life whereby whole chapters have been suddenly, and not always willingly, put behind you. That said, this has enabled you with ability to move on from any struggles, a hallmark of your status as a survivor.

Whatever Prime Minister

Libra 2°

Although life is mostly entropy, especially, now, on sweeping scales, there is no going back. Things were better before but we can not recapture what is lost. We may say we have no part in it, but it is untrue and unwise to do so. Rampant narcissism is part of the equation; because as you’re all staring at your reflections, humanity is being exterminated in the literal and figurative senses, both. Even the many of the so-called activists I encounter are sadly also in it for the attention; they’ve latched onto the term to gain some kind identity but if you call yourself an activist you probably aren’t really one. I don’t call myself an activist—I would have no right to do so—neither do I hide my head in the sand or lose myself in the mirror. I belong to part of the population that is completely at a loss. I’m an idealist losing the war against greed who is fed up with trying to live in a country, in a world, where even those who are purposely cheated and disempowered don’t even realize it and instead support their oppressors. I’m blue in the face; and selfishly I just want to slip away to some remote shore or woodland retreat and not have to fight any more good fights. Everything is an argument. Will & Grace is an argument that seems to be weighted as much as the debate on gun control. I’m fatigued by my own opinions. And that was probably somebody’s goal. I long for increasing anonymity and genuine experience. I want to drop out or into something new and distant. I want to find a way to stop seeing the world as cruel and claustrophobic. I want to go fetal with my binky.

Show Notes Twelve

Libra 1°

Okay, so we’ve arrived at Pisces, ruled by Neptune, the planet of dissolution, named for the god of the sea, the planet of non-material existence. And yes we have gotten to the point of the story where someone has “died” only to show up a few days later sporting some spiffy stigmata.

But not only has he not died but now apparently nobody else who believeth in him will either, which is neat. Pisces’ motto is I believe. Belief precedes proof. Science has now proven that all existence is really non-material, that matter is just dense energy. And that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. Something the ancient Zodiac seemed to know along. So none of us are really going anywhere. The point is moot. Immaterial.

We simply pass beyond the veil of illusion, through Salome’s seven colored scarves, over the RoyGBiv to Oz or Nirvana—Kurt Cobain was/is a Pisces—the immaterial universe being right here all the time. Pisces’ opposite facing fish portray the two-way street of birth and death, in limbo or utero—the name of a Nirvana album—Pisces being the mutable-water sign, the primordial soup from whence we came and to which we return.

Jesus was a Pisces like James Taylor Lou Reed Kurt Cobain George Harrison and Victor Garber. The Jesus Fish. The Pisces fish are the totems of Aphrodite, called Mari, and her son Eros. Mari is Mary whose della robbia blue gown fringed in white is the sea fringed with foam. Eros was at once the oldest of all the gods and yet an eternal babe. Kurt Cobain, Eros is Love. Jesus is Love. Energetic Love. Spiritual Love. That which connects us all. Close your eyes. Imagine, believe, that you are pure energy, letting your notions of matter dissolve. And feel yourself, as molecules, as atoms, as protons, as neutrons, hadrons, quarks, as pure energy, sharing the same primordial soup as the rest of us.

Virgo 30°

Let’s move onto Aquarius. Knowing he’s being scapegoated, what would Jesus do? Throw a dinner party? Yes! Performing a bit of transsub-stantiation—turning bread into flesh, wine into blood, that holy grail, the Aquarian “water bearer” of everlasting life. In Greek myth, the cup bearer, Hebe, pours the nectar that ensures the gods’ youthful immortality. John the Baptist too bears the baptismal waters of everlasting life. He, the lone voice in the wilderness, alienated, outcast, a madman, the weirdo on the shortbus who’s really just ahead of his time. Well we know how alienating being a progressive can be!

Jesus, too, feels he’ll be thrice denied and, when it comes to it, that even god has forsaken him. But Aquarius fixed-air is a point of light. A star. The Star in the Tarot depicts the Waterbearer. It surely does. It’s our true north. Truth. Revelation. Aquarius’ motto is I know. We can’t tell you how to have a revelation, but it will come in the eleventh hour if you’ve done all you can do. The eleventh house that of the future. Revelation gives you a glimpse. It’s also the house of humanity into whose arms you might fall. A trust exercise. Opposing Leo, the Sun, Aquarius is our own distant star to which we may return. Jesus’ last words may well have been beam me up. Feeling oh so alone

Virgo 29°

Sagittarius—excess—run amok is then restricted, contained by Saturn-ruled Capricorn whose motto is I use, that is to say I don’t waste, I save. Jesus Saves. Capri-corn, the goat horn of plenty, is all resource. Capricorn is cardinal-earth, the mountain with its natural resevoirs. We go to the mountain to receive god’s commandments, rules, restrictions—designed to help others rise up spiritually. The sign rules the bones and skin, structure and containment. And for some strange reason God tells Moses build your tabernacle from goat hair. Mo-hair.

Jesus, his own crowds of downtrodden people overflowing, delivers his sermon on the mount once sacred to goat god Ba’al. This leads to his arrrest, his containment and, well.. Capricorn MLK delivered his I’ve Been to the Mountaintop speech and the next day…Tragedy. The word derives from the Greek tragodia—am I pronouncing that right?—meaning Goat Song. The scapegoat saves us by riddding us of excess sin, baggage. Do Capricorn people tend to be scape-goated? Sure. Yes but as you say we are mainly self-sacrificing—I’d climb to the nearest mountain and take the hit if I could take out that orange orangu…Now now now…

But your point is well taken. We all must ask ourselves for what are we willing to do? How much YOU willing to sacrifice, and for WHAT CAUSE for the good of all people. Saturn rules Capricorn. In myth he’s the old deposed king, cut down. His emblem is the sycthe, the sickle, the grim reaper, old father time. At pagan Solstice the young Oak King vanquishes the old Holly King, Saturn, Santa. We make our Capricorn New Year’s resolutions, sacrifices. Out with the old. And though the Zodiac traces the Christ-mas story, there’s no way Jesus was born under the sign of Capricorn. Sure he was born near the new year when we had a ten month calendar.

Virgo 28°

So, last we saw Jesus, he returned from his Cancerian jaunt into the mystic landing a lush Leo life as King of Kings, performing Virgo alchemy and healing, spouting poetic parables from his Libra pulpit, wrestling personal demons of Scorpio desire, emerging rather changed, like Gandalf post Balrog, waxing ecstatically philosophical.

Enter the mutable-fire sign of Sagittarius ruled by Jupiter, named for the uber god of lightning, fire in the sky, triggering altered states of genius or madness. Either way a bit touched. Jupiter’s wife Juno, too, is blindingly radiant, a terrible wound but a gift of second sight. Sadge’s motto is I see, our vision being most expansive. Jupiter is growth, optimism, liberation, excess. (Sagittarius rules the liver.) And the thigh from which Jupiter gave birth to wild child Dionysus. The orgiastic god of wine, the ancient drug of choice for blowing ones mind, forging a stream between Libra consciousness and Scorpion unconscious.

Though you don’t need hooch to do so you must continue to blow your own minds, to expand your superelastic bubble brains with exposure to the exotic, the extreme, extrinsic exhultant. Education from the Latin Ex to draw out. Knowledge is power and Jupiter and Juno are gods of it!

Dionysus, with his pinecone septor, the pineal gland, the third eye, is the precursor of Jesus whose following spreads like wildfire in a purple haze. Superstar! Break on through. Light my fire. Are you experienced? Have you read the Ecclesiastes meaning “the big picture”? How about Blake? he’s a Sag? The Beat Poets? The Doors of Perception?

Virgo 27°

For all Libra’s goodness and light, Scorpio is dubious of appearances and must dig below the surface. If Libra is the glaring light of consciousness Scorpio is the deep, dark unconscious.

Its ruler Pluto is god of the underworld. It’s the fixed-water sign, symbolic ice, crystals, gems wrought by subterranean heat and pressure, a metaphor for the subconscious where deep meaning lies. From poetic Psalms to wise Proverbs we’ve left Libra’s gleaming pulpit of to delve our own inner depths and the subversive, hidden elements of society.

We all really must make an effort to uncover what’s going on—in here—and out there. Societies, like people, are only as sick as their secrets and not to go all conspiracy theory on your ass but there’s lots we don’t know. Pluto in his cloak of invisibility, is also god of riches. Plutocracy.

One Scorpio motto is I desire. Desires are subconscious, seeming to exist in spite of ourselves. Gems buried alive in our psyches calling to be exhumed. Treasure guarded by inner dragons of fear, shame—repressed power that must be unleashed lest it consume us! Regenerative power. Scorpio does rules the genitalialalala. We have is another sign motto. It’s our urge to merge through sex or psychic possession… Or joint banking. The eight house is that of other people’s money. Sex, sleep, death: where we merge with each other, the unconscious, and the infinite. Eight is the lemniscate the symbol of infinity. Cause and effect…
