I was also encouraged at the reaction to the GLOW concept by name-escapes-me from NEFA, and we will talk about the tour grant and how it suits our mission in myriad ways 1) to champion New England artists 2) to create this neo-Vaudeville circuit for performers to help them work more regularly and in more places throughout the region 3) connecting audiences to artists who not only evolve the world of performance, in its myriad forms, but social discourse, as well, through textual, musical, or, really, any form of narrative.

We will work off the academic smell of Harvard where you performed this already—cue ivy logo —into the equally academic Endicott which we should sell the hell out off. Here we hit on your North Shore roots so we don’t have to rewrite the press release for the local papers. Off the top of your head what are the main ones? And do you have names and titles and email addresses if so please send them to me. and THEN of course we have to get into the meat of Gravitational Fool and what it’s all about. So, drawing on stuff you’ve written before, give me an edit, a sprucing up, go back into a few of those paragraphs and punch em up as you see fit or not.

We need to be SMART and we need to be super EDGY and we need to be really CLASSY and a little CHEEKY and a lot FUNNY. I mean in terms of the vibe we are putting out there for this because this is the main point about a press release. FUNDRAISING.  I know you know that we are not limited to the NEFA grant for funding this “new tour circuit” that BRIAN KING is trailblazing with us; and in fact, we need to raise X more to help off set the NEFA grant. Sorry I am giving you the full $3000 from that gig as I’ve said. Consider that, if you will, part grant fee and part gig fee.The aim now is to get at least 3 things booked so that I can get the balance of the grant (and then many more bookings as well). And to get the next grant money in for the actual tour. All the while starting to make (us) money on subsequent gigs.

I know you are well aware, even before starting promoting for this showcase, of the amount of time and energy that has gone into just this one thing alone.

Add in the outreach and back and forth with the other half dozen venues we are trying to intrigue. It does not work to your benefit for me to outline the costs of this in real time….

Because we’d already be at capacity with very little to show for it.

So I intend to keep up this pace and not count hours plus travel plus any of it because there is no way in hell the grant money would ever cover the months of work that will go into all of this.I’d just rather make sure to get the job done and these gigs and tour in works and get everything written and promoted which in the end would be more like a $20K job than a $6K job if we’re honest.

But I have an emotional stake in this more than this grant could ever cover and I’m never going to be like…oh, well, time’s up hour-wise. No. I am in it for the longhaul no matter how many hours or tasks it takes to get WTIIMF and GF on a grand tour.

Which brings us to part of what we have to work out which is that simple agreement between us. I think that if I am making what I make with Oberon (that is 20% of gross for any gig for which I am doing all the press, promotion and marketing et al) so long as the actual tour grant money goes toward the bands travel and lodging which an Oberon typically picks up tab for, then we have a good locomotive going! agree?

The little bits of NEFA grant money will have primed the pump for us to do what will hopefully be years’ worth of work, and got the gears to catch so we can start generating income in general. I have a good feeling about some of the venues we can take this; not just new england of course.

Afterglow is basically done but for trying to find more money and audience building and doing whatever press interviews come in. Really. All the work does happen over time. So I’m actually very free to focus on Endicott as I am on the start of Afterglow-at-Oberon. I’ve made a good friend now at City Winery in the talent producer (I am going as HIS guest to see Rizo LOL) and I have a good feeling about their small room if you get my drift!.

I will be preparing a press release. We will announce Endicott and this new Glow auspice all in one release is my idea.I think it is news alone that GF is happening at Endicott but I think if we tie it to Oberon/ART and the series too, vaguely, we can get a lot of play.

Likewise in the release i ALREADY sent to Globe, Herald, Jared Bowen, Improper, et al, which was a GLOBAL Thing about Afterglow I mentioned you of course and also Rizo (prematurely) oh well. So you’ve already co-starred in one release this season LOL. Press and Promotion are my FAVORITE Parts!!

Congratulations. You have sunk to new depths of poor character when I scarcely thought that was possible.

And to think I was actually looking forward to building on the audience I’ve already established for you in Boston. Oh well. People warned me about going back through this door and I didn’t listen.

I am of course cancelling the radio appearance we have pencilled in for you and, when asked what happened, I will answer honestly, to the smattering of journalists I had already reached out to on your behalf.

 Now, please find attached our invoice for the work (or what you called in your correspondence “kill fee”) you had us do on your behalf, which is well documented. You apparently told Michael in your conversation, too, that you were compensating Afterglow for the work already performed. That was clever. Please do not make the mistake of not paying this invoice immediately. We have non-profit lawyers working pro bono and at this point and, on principle, we will pursue this matter to the end.

Of course we shall  see you on October 2 in any case! It will just be us—we will no longer be bringing the Cambridge folks with us to see you—I will explain the reason why.

Provincetown’s Eight Annual AFTERGLOW FESTIVAL, September 11-15, Celebrates Its Grassiest Roots While Expanding Its Scope throughout New England and Beyond

Provincetown, MA August 2018: The 8th annual Afterglow Festival takes stage at the Art House, Provincetown, September 11-15, with a program of ten shows by artists working a wide spectrum of stage forms: John Jarboe & the Bearded Ladies Cabaret, Martha Graham Cracker, Tammy Faye Starlite, Joey Arias, Dan Fishback, Carol Lipnik, Anne Stott, The Illustrious Blacks, Enid Ellen, Ruby Rose Fox, hosted by festival founders Starsky + Cox. Tickets are $30 per show; $240 for a full GLOW pass to all festival shows. And, new this year: Afterglow “Sparklers” who donate $100 receive not one but two half-price tickets to all shows.

Afterglow was founded in 2011 by Quinn Cox and John Cameron Mitchell (Tony-award-winning creator of Hedwig and The Angry Inch) to honor Provincetown’s birthright as the birthplace of the modern American stage and an incubator for new works, developing independent stage arts in Provincetown, providing it a shining star on the international festival map. Afterglow has presented upwards of seventy-five artists in its first seven years; premiering works that moved off-Broadway, like James Lecesne’s The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey, Drew Droege’s Bright Colors and Bold Patterns; and others like Mike Albo’s The Junket, Penny Arcade’s Longing Lasts Longer, Stella Starsky’s Birth of the American Baroness, Dane Terry’s Anytime Moe, Justin Vivian Bond’s Mx. America and new Hedwig material by John Cameron Mitchell; championing the careers of Bridget Everett, Cole Escola and Erin Markey.

Afterglow has always brought in homegrown artists—Zoe Lewis, Billy Hough, Darlene van Alstyne, Patrick Riviere and others—to perform with its headliners. And this year local heroine Anne Stott and Enid Ellen will perform their own solo shows; while Ruby Rose Fox joins the roster of Boston artists like Jonny Blazes and Brian King and Providence’s Sage Francis, who’ve performed in festival. Increasing audience traveling expressly to Provincetown for the festival is a main thrust of Afterglow’s mission. And Cox and Mitchell have, with top names in tow, performed shows in New York City and other cities, to entice audiences to the tip of Cape Cod. Afterglow has also partnered with charitable organizations Provincetown’s Helping Our Women (HOW),the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod (ASGCC), Camp Lightbulb and the national The Trevor Project.

This year also celebrates the fourth season at the American Repertory Theater, in Cambridge, of Cox’s curated Afterglow-at-Oberon (formerly Glowberon) series, which will run from October to May 2019 and feature Tori Scott, Taja Lindley, Dan Fishback, The Illustrious Blacks, The Bearded Ladies Cabaret and Sven Ratzke. Additionally, the Afterglow Festival has been awarded a grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) to create tours for artists throughout the region and will take Brian King‘s Gravitational Fool on the road this year, with a showcase at Endicott College’s Manninen Arts Center, September 27. “Afterglow presents” one-night-only performances, too, this year, starting with Lady Rizo at the City Winery, Boston, October 2.

Under a similar, new auspice, GLOW, the tagline of which is A Moveable Festival, Cox plans to get tours up and running throughout the region, including all six New England states, by the Spring of 2019.

“I would like to create a sort of alternative neo-Vaudeville circuit, if I could, starting here, in New England, working with theaters and colleges and universities, and museums and arts centers, in towns and cities throughout the region, where our artists can travel with regularity, and find new, wider spread audiences.

“All the while mindful of Provincetown as our spiritual center where we incubate, premier and develop works by our artists, it only makes sense to help the seventy-five plus performers we’ve worked with connect with audience in more and more places, where they can display their artistry and present their works, stamped, as they ever shall be, with a virtual made-in-Provincetown brand.”

A century ago, Eugene O’Neill, Susan Glaspell and the Provincetown Players began producing plays in Provincetown, eventually erecting their Playhouse in Greenwich Village where Afterglow’s core artists perform—namely, at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater. As a producing entity, Afterglow stages shows there and at Oberon/American Repertory Theater with proceeds supporting the festival. Besides New York, artists hail from Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Australia the U.K. and the Netherlands. “Once synonymous with painting and theater, P-town remains a fine-arts colony, but it lost the plot with its stage heritage,” says Cox, who under the auspice of the Glow Theatre, will create a playwrights initiative with Pulitzer prize-winning playwrights Tony Kushner and Doug Wright in advisory roles.

Raising money to travel, house and pay artists’, promotional and other fees, Cox and Mitchell and artistic board—Eileen Myles, Penny Arcade, Justin Vivian Bond, Stella Starsky, Taylor Mac, Jill Pangallo, Michael Cunningham, Matt Ray, John Kelly, James Lecesne, John Dowd and Daniel Minahan and Mitchell—actively garner awareness. As the festival grows, so too does support from residents and businesses. Afterglow has received support from The Diller von Furstenberg Family Foundation and Salt Hotels. Keeping Provincetown’s stage legacy alive is a cause that travels well, too, as evidenced by past sponsorships from figures like television producers Alan Poul and World of Wonder author J.K. Rowling and president of DC Comics, Diane Nelson.

I’ve decided on a new tack for my intros which I think I might have mentioned; but anyway nobody is reading this but you and me so you’ll forgive if I repeat myself.

I get on the plane feeling better than I have in my life. I was so happy that I began working steadily starting in September on our Christmas show for Joe’s Pub because we have never had a bigger, more appreciative house; and though we were spot on for the holiday, with song and narrative, the performance speaks to our larger scope, now, as individual storytellers with, in my case, burgeoning, and, for S., continuing solo show work. And here it is, January, and we are starting a new chapter of our lives. The plan is to spend a couple months solid here, building the consultancy, which we’ve also been steadily working on since September.

Good thing we had pictures taken this Fall because they really make a difference in approaching French press and so forth. We will let out the Paris flat when we go to Venice; and make a list of those who we can gift the place too—Pete & Ted, Susanne, Pascale & Matt, others, over the coming months. And in summer, we will really work out something with someone we meet, maybe through Susi, to let people in and out and otherwise caretake for us in our absence. With money coming in now, salary wise, we should be able to have half the full amount down for our New England house, within the year—I have and we have been saving . And, with all our outreach in regard to our products, we will in the process of building the event business along with the other elements of the brand. I can’t wait to get to the apartment but I’m going to enjoy this plane trip, having sorted out a way not to travel like cattle.

I will have a car waiting and make my way to the flat. Tomorrow I will shop for some foodie basics and flowers as we will have at least two clients the day after and three more by the end of the week. We are going to focus exclusively on our own design ideas for the coming months, and I’m putting together a very short list of performers for Afterglow 2019—Frank DeCaro, Molly Pope, Dane Terry, Bridget Barkan, Stella Starsky, John Jarboe, Jibz Cameron, and then a smattering of biggies. Easy peasy.

We will enjoy Spring after traveling, and get into a steady rhythm, focusing on the major design markets and other times that press and buyers and potential clients come through this beautiful city. We will coordinate with P + M and J + N and J + L and maybe D + G. The Nelsons could take the apartment at some point. There are many Americans and others in Paris who will likely come and see us. I need to reach out to Wachsberger in any case.

Leo 22 (August 14)

Last evening we had vegetable platters and rice and G. made her banana dessert. We talked about the company and investment and N. and B. allowed for some healthy insights. Of course we are doing this. And if it doesn’t happen this time it will be some kind of sickness or something. Also when it comes to books we need to know what Harper meant about competition in the market. We will have to have that talk. I am strangely weirded out that there is still something of a copyright issue, but, again, it’s just a kink to work out. Merging manufacture with appearances.

This truly is what I’m living for. And even this Blague has to be in service to a carefully crafted four-cornered machinery. I am looking very much forward to the business of being in it. I cannot rush the works. What I can do thoguh is cool my jets and sit back and relax a bit more even. I despise the sound of sirens and will soon be along the highway. We will stop, first, in Orleans and grab a bit at Sunbird. I need to figure out when I’m going to peddle our wares other places. I have to come up with a very stiff schtick in promoting all around.

Some notes for an upcoming event I’m doing: Our press release will announce this showcase but pack a bigger wallop to hopefully get more than a listing and some kind of featureto that end we will position the showcase as the first ever nefa-powered foray by Afterglow team (of Ptown and ART) into touring under the new GLOW “a moveable festival” aegis

I’m hoping this will seem very newsworthy and also contextualize Brian & GF as the type of superior artist (New England based) we seek to champion

This will marry to Endicott wanting to position Manninen Arts Center et al (and you can give me a sentence on that)

our release might also hopefully inspire interest for Brian from venues (and press) throughout New England (we should say we are inviting other venue directors to this)

and overall support in what we are aiming to do: 1) create a tour for Brian and other N.E. based artists through these NEFA grants; and 2) create this “moveable festival”

We like to think of Endicott as our premier venue in all of this and of course showcase (pun intended) the Glow’s gratitude to Manninen Center etc. and what we hope to be a happy partnership…..foremost bringing our brand of artistry to the North Shore which is quite aHtsy and sophisticated, leaning into Salem and environs for community support (as that city has increasingly attracted young artists and entrepreneurs which might specifically intrigue that demographic, while appealing widely to more affluent residents akin to the subscribers we reach in Cambridge at ART etc.

We want to appeal as classy, smart, accessible avant-gard, funny, thoughtful, musical, sociological, artistic/activist

Everyone returns today. I will do some cooking and clean up a bit and move some laundry through. Father-in-law came in shouting my name and wanted to know if I wanted pizza; meanwhile everybody else had just written to say that they had had lunch and I was to, yes, forge on making dinner. They took a number of cars. I’m so grateful I didn’t go, on a number of levels. It was sort of fun and weird to stay here by myself.

This Blague of late, since I started document the trip to Alask and British Columbia, might be considered mundane in that I’m just recounting what is happening, whether in reality or in snippets of dream, on any given day. But that’s okay. There is still the odd synchronicity and I hope I have a naturally humorous view toward life. I might have mentioned that someone I know well made some derogatory comment about those who write daily blogs talking about their lives and I thought but (you know?) I do that. Oh well, I don’t really care. The purpose, as if there need be one, of this Blague changes from year to year and month to month and day to day. Sometimes it just feels good to write sentences spontaneously without thinking about constructing them. Like a flushing out of the system. A sort of literaray lymphatic release procedure. Not a metaphor I use everyday. Anyway, I don’t care. Or rather I do care too much. And sometimes this can just be therapeutic, putting down into type what is currently going through my brain without much regard for the result. It’s freeing. So there.

Nigh on three weeks until festival with a thousand other wheels spinning now must be a process of letting things fall into place without forcing any one thing. I also have to allow for socializing. What I can weed out I will weed out. Otherwise, I will put extra schnoz to the grindstone and make sure to get as much accomplished as I can. I probably won’t get anything major done on the festival until the three-week-out point. That’s okay. I have enough in the bank to really build on that; I will go after missionaries and sponsors. All will be done. The books as well. If only I relax.

I have come up with the mantra of Stop, Finish and Don’t Worry. And I’m very much myself not adding anything new. I will go to Maine for my birthday if the fates allow. But I’m just as happy going to Boston. Mine is a three prong business of consulatancy, books—at least I thought it was three pronged—ah, yes performance. How could that slip my mind—a bit scary. When I say performance I mainly mean storytelling. This is an area where I can really make some inroads, especially staging at hotels here and there. Storyteller and Playwright and Performer. 2019 may be the final year and feature everyone from the past in some way or other. Things must evolve, it is the only way.

Leo 20° (August 12)

In the next day I will be finished with booking all the artists’ travel; I believe I will find that once I’ve done that, and written a press release and gotten it out, that all I need do then is focus on ticket sales and fundraising and doing the odd interview. I will have time to start getting press together, here and there, mainly on “Scope” days when I’m working. I really need to watch J.’s Strike series and see what all the hubbub might be about. I have only read into the first book. I am a bad friend-reader. I really am. I wish people would stop sending me their books. It puts me in an awful bind. Bind. Book. Bind, Get It?

I’ll jump out to the store again and make sure I have some red wine for tomorrow when everyone returns. Things are chugging along, at a pace, as best they might. At this point I’m optimistic about having negotiated a great deal for Lady Rizo (which will go to shit once her venal manager steps in and not only annoys everyone but cuts me completely out of the deal with gaslighting flare). The g-word again. I cannot wait to rid my life of the kind of complications knowing too many people brings.

Drastic times do call for drastic measures; and I believe that I am getting my brain around the reality of taking quite the permanent powder. I have so much to get through between now and next week that I can’t quite fully articulate this all to myself. But I know that I am onto something. And I know change is coming. And rather than let it happen to me I need to take the bull by the horns and make it happen. I know I have some major healing to do in this process and, of course, I am determined to see that through.

Funny I’m not experiencing any sense of rock bottom or anything like that. Typically in the past when I’ve felt a need for extreme change it is because I’ve hit a wall. I don’t feel that I’ve hit a wall necessarily; rather I feel that I’ve been on an island, stuck in the same experience, for too long; and I long for a sense of adventure and renewal and entrepreneurship and, well, any number of new experiences. If Europe becomes the aim this year I very much intend not to get lost in any escapism, but to make it part of the upswing. I must focus my energy on pulling the strings through all my experience and making some major inroads in so doing.

I know friends will be visiting next week and that I’m just coming off a luxury experience otherwise; but I need to tap into my more ascetic Spartan self now for sure. I need the backbone necessary to get a lot of this fundraising done. And, really, it would be grand if I could make a grand a day for the final three weeks of festival. That will be my goal for sure.

There was something about Thom Lussier. He had a brother who had a wife who had a sister. Anyway, there was a Pisces man and he of course looked like a combination of Matthew Broderick and Don Knotts, as they all do.

What dreams may come. I need to make the focus of these book intros and the outline for the new Xmas show more, respectively, a love letter and a survey of superpowers. That really is the answer.

I did eat more of the pasta, sour cream and smoked salmon and then went to the store, this time myself, to get what I needed. I’m working through the day and trying to scrape something together but the words won’t come.

I haven’t bathed in hot water and its hot in here and I’m just going to try and make some shit happen and I fall asleep. And I wake up and I’m starving but I am not cooking, so I look up local restaurants, find a place and call an Uber. It’s time to catch up on the David Sedaris book in any case. And three hours pass and I’m closing the joint having steadily drunk a bottle of red.

My dreams were about this apartment that was sort of nowhere, kind of like Reading, no color houses; and some dark skinned guy with a kind of newsy cap and it might have been about Jersey City and Edna, our housekeeper, whose son started Kool & The Gang.

Very fitfull sleep, in and out. I’ve now seen not all but the same parts of Murder on the Orient Express three times. I watch the show about the Browns, Hard Knocks. The weather is really good but you can tell it’s switching it’s all switching.

Being on the boat is not even anything I’m thinking about. This always happens. It switches so abruptly that it will take a week or so before I begin musing about the boat again. I really could use a hot bath. What’s with this place.

After the strange synchronicity of yesterday, I am in an expansive mood. I am happy there is cold brew and I keep turning down the thermostat. This morning might be the last even luke-warm bath I’ll draw. I don’t need anything in particular and I’m getting into the solitude. What’s that Madonna song about San Pedro? That gets stuck in my head and other places and I’m on a jelly roll. And lo and behold here we go again. This reminds me of the Lance situation. Delibery. Really not since Ghana. These are the fragments in my head. And it’s impossible. There has never been anything even remotely like it; but somehow it always happens. I cannot explain how as it seems to defy every law of nature. And then briefly you find a way to make what shouldn’t be interesting and it’s kinda cool.

That was the threefold dream I remember of today.

Somewhere I am happy for Young Jean Lee and a lot of other people. But it is becoming not only increasingly clear but urgent that I must focus on my own creativity. Seriously. I’ll get to lie in the sun a little and I really should make some fresh pasta with sour cream and smoked salmon; I don’t see why I wouldn’t. And I don’t much see why I wouldn’t eat it for the next three meals, if I chose to. Tonight for me will end in some kind of heap watching tele. And it’ll be a somewhat slow realization that I have gained a ton of weight now, being away a solid three weeks. Oh well. I might be a bit over my head. But when has that ever truly stopped me. Besides I feel there is more fun to be had.
